 things that go BUMP {open}

Pressing a hand to her head, Libby made her way out of the DA’s meeting rooms, making her way towards the nearest bathroom. They’d been practising defensive spells, and her protego had been too slow to block the expelliarmus spell her partner had been using on her. She’d gone flying across the room and banged her head against the wall – much to her embarrassment. As if it wasn’t bad enough that she’d not been able to do such a simple spell, one that they had practised for weeks on end two years ago, everybody had turned to look at her, and Libby had suddenly found herself the centre of attention. Alright, so she got along well with pretty much everyone at the DA; being part of the same cause had brought all of them together, but she got on well when she was working with just one person, at the side of the room where nobody else other than Luna, Ginny or Neville had to see her. It was easier now, to do things in front of the rest of the group, but not when it involved something humiliating like banging her head on a wall at a several mile an hour speed. Of course, she’d scrambled to her feet, flushed red with embarrassment, protesting that she was fine as she’d scurried out of the room in order to make sure that she really was alright (although it was mainly to get away from the room’s enquiring stares).

She wasn’t really sure that she was, though; her head was throbbing and she was pretty sure that she was either sweating profusely or bleeding. Libby winced, pushing open the door to the bathroom and finding with relief that it was empty. She probably should have made her way directly to the hospital wing, she realised belatedly, but dealing with Madam Pomfrey was too much at the moment; she couldn’t say how she’d really come across the injury, of course, and the last time she’d been up there, with a sprained wrist, her hands had had pins and needles after the healing charm for days. Besides…wasn’t she supposed to be able to do healing charms now? Honestly, she wasn’t entirely sure she remembered any, but that was probably something to do with the headache. Or maybe they hadn’t learned any yet; Libby had to admit that she wasn’t sure.

Well, no matter. She could deal with it quite efficiently without magic, she was sure, as long as she didn’t have to do any vast explaining. Libby ran cold water into the sink, and while waiting for it to fill up, pressed her fingers gingerly over her head. “Ouch!” she muttered as she hit a particularly tender spot, grimacing as she looked in the mirror and saw the bump already forming. She’d avoid touching that, then, she decided.

Oh, he'd seen it happen alright. In fact, he had been watching Libby for most of the meeting, whether she knew it or not. Of course, someone else had noticed his wandering stare, he was sure. Laurie had been getting on his nerves lately, and no longer did he feel the need to be around the girl all the time. In fact, stealing moments in the hallway didn't make his heart race anymore. Perhaps the last time he had felt anything relatively affectionate about Laurie had been when he was spilling his guts to Daphne, and at that point, he'd had another girl resting her head against him. Obviously his stare was going to wander, and at the moment, the object of his attention was his "pen pal", to put it in such ungracious terms, Libby. So, after Libby's accident, Nazim promptly excused himself from Laurie's side, throwing her a line about how he was worried for his friend.

Though, perhaps worry wasn't the only interest Naz held for the girl. Why, he'd told her quite a bit in their letters, perhaps even more than he'd told Daphne. However, he felt obliged to follow Libby from the room and see that she was okay, whether she liked it or not. His footsteps muffled by his thick woolen socks, Nazim padded along behind her and thought about what he would say to her once he was sure there was no one else around. Or perhaps he wouldn't say anything, like usual. No, he'd sworn to her that he would overcome his shyness if she would work on hers. Maybe she wouldn't keep up her end of the deal, but he certainly intended to do something about the wordlessness he felt every time he was around a beautiful girl. Whatever. He would at least say hello to her. That wouldn't give him cotton mouth. He hoped.

He didn't give walking into the Girls' Bathroom a second thought. After all, he'd done much worse, or so he believed. Naz leaned almost comically against the wall, shoving his hands deep into his jean's pockets and crossed his ankles. He watched Libby wash her head for a few minutes then pushed off the wall and waltzed over to her, the picture of self-confidence. "That looks like it smarts, smarty. Wanna let the Doc take a look?" It seemed the only thing he could mutter without freezing up was cliched line after cliched line. Not that they didn't work, for they most certainly did, but it was tiresome to be unable to come up with anything better to say. "You haven't written in awhile. Is everything okay?" For the truth was, Naz, as much as he played, was quite interested in Libby's life. Perhaps, maybe, even fascinated. None of his other friends seemed as complex as she was and, while it was true that he didn't spend as much time trying to get to know them, his other friends had never given him so much as a minute of their time, besides maybe Daphne, when he asked them about their lives. "I thought we were going to try and learn some spells together. Are we still on for that?" Naz smiled awkwardly and tried to keep his eyes trained on her eyes rather than the sore looking bump on her head.

Taking care not to press too hard now that she knew how tender the bump was, Libby soaked a paper towel with water and slowly dabbed at her head, taking her time with cleaning the wound if only because it hurt. There was probably a quicker way to do this with magic – after all, she was in her seventh year, and they’d learned spells that could do pretty much anything by now – but she preferred to go about things the muggle way. Magic was great, but it wasn’t reasonable to try and rely on it completely; not when you couldn’t still say all the incantations at will, anyway, despite the improvements. Besides, with everything that had gone on in the world over the last year or so, magic scared her.

Sure, it was amazingly great, and she loved learning new things, but the power that it gave people was terrifying; they thought that because they could do spells and curses or whatever, it gave them some kind of infinite power over those who couldn’t. That was just wrong – everybody was equal, whether or not they could do magic, whether or not they were pureblood, whether or not they were in Slytherin. Everything was leaning one way, in favour of a certain group of people, and Libby didn’t like it; sometimes, she was ashamed to admit that she came from the same world as those people who had gone round killing muggles and capturing innocent people. Even now, they didn't seem particularly shamed by what they had done over the last year; it was down to the power, and magic had given them that power. Maybe it was best to just stick with the muggle way of doing things. It wasn’t like she was incapable of washing her own head, anyway.

"That looks like it smarts, smarty. Wanna let the Doc take a look?"

“I’m fine, thanks,” Libby told whoever had come into the bathroom (a guy that clearly wasn’t too bothered about the rules, at any rate), suspecting it to be one of the people in her house who thought they could win girls’ affection with a few clichéd lines – the sort of people she tried to avoid. Were there people who were really so shallow as to believe the sort of lines those guys spouted? They all just sounded so false, like they cared about nothing but winning enough affection to get into their pants. Wiping the last of the blood from her head, Libby turned round to see who had joined, and frowned when she saw it was Nazim. That wasn’t like him, was it? Sure, she only really knew him through his letters, which didn’t tell her what he acted like, but it puzzled her. “Oh. Hi,” she added, pulling her hair out from behind her ear in an attempt to cover the bump.

"You haven't written in awhile. Is everything okay?”

Libby nodded. "Sorry. Just b-busy," she explained. It seemed as though the professors weren't happy anymore unless they'd all set several foot-long essays to be completed in less than a week, and with the DA and her prefect duties as well, Libby had found herself with little time to sit down and write a letter. "And a rogue Death Eater attacked some muggles in the town next to where my sister goes to school," she added, remembering how scared she'd been when she'd heard about it. Charity had been unconcerned by it, probably putting it down to terrorists or just a gang with guns or something, but it had worried her. Sure, it wasn't as bad as things had been in the War, with the Death Eaters going into towns and random and killing innocent muggles in their searches for specific people, but Libby imagined that the Death Eaters weren't exactly happy now. Most of them were laying low - thank God - but they were all warped people. They probably enjoyed hurting people, even if they were no longer welcome in this world. They'd certainly got more than the appropriate amount of pleasure out of torturing the students here last year.

“I thought we were going to try and learn some spells together. Are we still on for that?"

Libby smiled shyly, nodding in agreement. She could work with Nazzy, she was sure; she’d told him a lot of things she’d only let people like her sister and Aaron know in their letters, and though they’d not really spoken all that much in person, she didn’t mind. If anything, the text medium was a better one for her; no stuttering, no awkward silences, no shyness. She was able to say things that she would never be able to even get out of her mouth via letter, and it felt good to be able to talk to someone without the actual talking. Just because she wasn't stuttering so much now, it didn't mean that conversations were suddenly her favourite thing in the world. Yes, she had friends, but it was taking her a while to get used to that - properly used to it. She'd still choose her own company over that of others' any day, and Libby didn't want it to be that way. She wanted to spend time with the people that she liked, and maybe spending some time practising spells with Nazim would help her get over that hurdle and really enjoy her friends' company. “Yeah,” she replied. “Yeah we are.”

ooc;; and bang go the relatively short posts!
