In the grey pre-dawn light, his limbs creaked like a rusted door hinge, and for a moment his weight teetered over his front legs, causing the animal to have a drunken stagger and come perilously close to planting his face into the frosted earth. After recovering his balance, the animal bowed low, his rump raising high in the air, ears down between his front paws and then, as his limbs clicked a final time, he straightened agonizingly, slowly, and began to caper towards the forest in a zig-zag pattern. Yards from the great trees, the creature veered sharply and loped down the slight crest, chasing the faded scent of a sickly rabbit. The creature’s sides heaved with exhaustion, his pelt practically transparent, the bones quite likely to pop out at any moment. It had been many years since the creature had seen glory, and with the way the world had changed this past year, he had finally accepted the truth; he was of a dying breed. And it was all his fault.

He could have had dozens of children by now. He had, at one point. However, cowed by fear, he had retreated into the shadows. He’d let himself be tamed. The creature growled and scuffed at the ground as he reached the end of the rabbit’s trail. How he continued to exist he didn’t understand. Death followed him everywhere these days, and he had, once or twice, come close to accepting the solace of nothingness. However, the last thing he wanted to do was haunt this earth, and if he were to bow out now there would be an infinite number of walls to pass through for him. A hundred meters away a squirrel broke from its cover beneath a bush and he sped after it. The incline, though, proved to be too much, and the creature found himself back where he’d started; his teeth coated with the unforgiving ground. The creature howled pitifully and gazed up at the cloudy sky. Sunlight was just peeking over the horizon, but his hollow eyes saw only the monstrous clouds pressing down on him. Though wispy, they oppressed him. The creature heaved himself to his feet again. He crawled into the shadowy forest, his tail tucked between his legs. He kept to the path, not a known path, but one he’d traveled many times. The village was on the other side. If he could only make it there, and maybe find a snack on the way, if he could make it to the other side of the forest, he wouldn’t be merciful. Not anymore. He didn’t have anyone to bow to anymore. He was in control again. No, he wouldn’t be merciful anymore.

It would be easy. If he was lucky a child would be playing in the woods. ‘Nice doggy,’ it would say, and then reach out its hand to pet him, and, snap, he would have all that he needed. So easy. Easy as when it had happened to him, all those years ago. A silly dare, one he couldn’t resist, a fate he had embraced with little hesitance. One child. One human, even. That’s all it took to build an army. One. Just one. A number he could easily perceive. One snap of his jaws and he wouldn’t be alone anymore. He wouldn’t be the punch line of a bad joke anymore. One child and his name would be in every reprimand, every fearful child’s eyes. Just a snap. That’s all it took. If he could just reach the village. It would be easy. So easy. Just like when it had happened to him, in the same forest, on the same path. One child.
