angel of the night - Lucy « Thread Started on Sept 10, 2009, 3:16pm »
Dianne stumbled down the alley in the dark, her hands outstretched to the side to allow her fingertips to touch the wall for support, support she so desperately needed right now. The night had not gone to plan as she had hoped. The Grendel had sent her on a simple mission, yet she had managed to mess it up perfectly – only she could do that. Dianne had been sent the location of some middle-aged man who was less than desirable in the eyes of the Grendel and therefore needed to be eliminated as quickly as possible. Dianne had been tracking him for several days now, finally approaching him tonight – he had been at a club, seeming to pretend he still fitted among the crowd that gathered there, when Dianne had made it seem quite obvious that she would like to escort him home. Succeeding in that, Dianne had then planned on making the murder short and sweet, just like she had been ordered too, but complications had arrived in the form of the man’s brother. Upon seeing the lifeless body of his brother with Dianne standing over him, the brother had attacked at once – she hadn’t been expecting it. Dianne had only just managed to pull out her wand and disarm him (he hadn’t been particularly talented) before she finished him off as well.
Unfortunately, it had come at a price. Dianne’s thigh sported a large gash from where a stray hex had hit her before she had managed to raise a shield, which was how she came to be limping on her own in the dark. It wouldn’t be much of a concern if the wound hadn’t been so deep, which was what truly troubled Dianne; she had tried to patch it up as best she could, but Healing had never been a talent of hers – the most she had been able to achieve was lessening the blood flow and wrapping a makeshift bandage from some cloth she had found in the house around it. Suddenly a stabbing pain went from her thigh and straight through the side of her body as she took another step, causing Dianne to lurch to the ground with enough force for her to unconsciously cry out into the night. Clamping her mouth tight with determination, Dianne slowly eased herself into a sitting position against the wall, laying her injured leg out before her. Bracing herself and attempting to slow her breathing, she eased her robe to the top of her thigh in order to get a clear look at the injury – what she saw made Dianne whimper and bite her lip in order to keep quiet, shaken by the amount of blood. It was different when it wasn’t her blood; someone else’s she could handle easily.
“Je vais tuer cette peu de merde cent fois plus de, je jure. Je ne m'inquičte pas s'il est mort, je trouverai une maničre”. It was crude, and quite out of character, but right then Dianne was scared. Despite the common belief about her kind, Vampires did not miraculously heal from any wound in an instant. It took time, just like anybody else, and it hurt just as much. Leaning her head back against the wall, Dianne let the tears flow down her cheeks and did her best to stifle the sobs that threatened to overcome her. Some assassin she was. She couldn’t even do that right, and the task had been perhaps the easiest presented to Dianne so far.

Lucy woke up late in the afternoon, and Dianne was gone. She figure she was either out with her Grendel "buddies". If the word buddy could be used to describe these people. They talked about pure-blood supremacy how muggles were poisoning the wizardry world. Lucy didn't agree with their belief and she was a pure-blood. Since Dianne was out of the house Lucy decided it would be good to dog some cleaning. She had to first feed the canine companion that was sitting calmly at her feet. Lucy remembered when Dianne brought the dog home. It was a cold fall day and Dianne comes home and brings with her some stray that had followed. Dianne had begged to let Lucy to keep it at her castle. Since Lucy had been the one to turn Dianne into a vampire and was reminded of it often by Dianne, so she agreed to let her keep it.
Lucy picked up the irish wolfhound's food bowl and went down to her kitchen and got the dog some food, then went to clean the reading room. She went to over the old fashioned desk and started picking up the loose papers. most were old letters to Dianne. She was getting ready to throw them away when one of them struck her curiousity. It was addressed to Dianne but under it were the words "your daughter." She opened this letter and read it's contents. It peaked her curiosity even more. Why hadn't Dianne ever told Lucy that she had a daughter. This made a big knot in her stomach, it made even more regret about her changing Lucy, but she couldn't have in conscience left her to die.
Lucy pocketed the letter and would ask Dianne about it later. She was busy cleaning when she realized it was getting late and Dianne had not yet come home. She figured that she might have lost track of time. It was until about midnight that Lucy started to worry , She grabbed her coat and head out onto the dark streets of Diagon Alley. She walked up and down looking hard for Dianne. Lucy. She was almost going to give up for the night and she noticed a white figure fall onto the ground. She hoped it wasn't Dianne. Dianne may make Lucy's life miserable at times but she cared for the child like she was her own child. When she approached she realized it was Lucy. She saw that Lucy was bleeding and was crying.
She picked up the wand close by and used a simple healing spell her mom had taught her. The wound instantly stopped bleeding. The wound still existed and there wasn't anything she could do about that. "What the hell happened?" Lucy asked calmly in the most motherly torne she had. She hoped that it wasn't because of a stupid job for the Grendel. "Did the grendel do this to you?" Lucy asked calmly. Lucy sat next to Dianne and for next few minutes said nothing and was going to listen to her.

Maybe this was her wake up call? Perhaps it was a sign that this wasn’t the life Dianne was meant to lead after all. This could be a way of whatever universal powers there might be telling her to get out. Just run, get out of the Grendel and don’t look back. It would be easy; Dianne had been living a life full of secrecy for the past two decades. Hiding from just one more organisation to add to the list would be no problem. Except that didn’t fix anything. Not her leg, not her life. It would just cause more trouble, especially when Dianne knew just how ruthless the Grendel could be – it was she who carried out those orders. Then there was the issue of why she had joined the group in the first place; Emilie. Without the Grendel, what hope did Dianne have? They had been the ones to find her and give her a meaning again. Surely she owed them for that; of this she was certain.
Dianne was pulled from her mind as her leg began to itch, her body fast-forwarding as it began to clot her blood in her cut quicker than it would naturally. Had she done it unintentionally? It was still possible to perform wandless, accidental magic when you were an adult, especially in stressful situations. It had occurred only twice before in Dianne’s adult years – once when she had been attacked as an Auror, the other when her daughter had tripped on the stairs and saved only by Dianne’s magic.
"What the hell happened?"
Of course, that would be a more reasonable explanation. Dianne closed her eyes in defeat as Lucy slid down next to her on the floor, obviously intent on staying with Dianne whether she liked it or not. Grimacing slightly, for despite the blood stopping Dianne was still in agony over her leg, she pushed on her arms in order to sit up better from her previously slumped position – there was no way Dianne would hand any weaknesses over to Lucy. “I don’t suppose you would believe me if I told you I’d slipped?” her voice, even she could tell, was weak in her current state and Dianne let out a small groan of frustration. There was one easy way of replenishing her blood supply…but Lucy was here. It was okay when Dianne was on her own; Lucy would attempt to turn a blind eye as long as Dianne didn’t go around brandishing dead bodies across her castle, but to actually hunt and feed in her presence was most likely asking too much from the old vampire. Not that Dianne gave a damn about what Lucy approved of, but right now she wasn’t exactly in the peak of her physical health in order to fight past the older woman.
"Did the grendel do this to you?"
Here Dianne rolled her eyes, tilting her head to view Lucy better. Would she ever let this Grendel business go? What Dianne did in her own time were Dianne’s personal affairs, not Lucy’s. Dianne briefly skated over the idea that Lucy could actually be asking out of some concern for her, but like a teenager would with their parents she quickly brushed this idea aside. “The Grendel didn’t hurt me, if that’s what you mean” she replied, her accent a mix of her origins in France and the accent she had picked up in England, mainly from Lucy herself. “I was doing them a favour but…-” here she paused, her eyes seeking anywhere but Lucy as she turned away again. “-but things got a bit out of hand” she spoke softly, berating herself as fresh tears threatened to spill from her eyes.

'would you believe if i told you I'd slipped" Lucy chuckled at the comment had she not known Dianne better She would have probably believed her. "I would have had i not known about the Grendel and their intentions, I have seen many a magical injury as you may have known my mother was a healer at St. mungo's. I hate to say this again for what feels like the tenth time. They are just using you Dianne, what do you hope to accomplish by sticking with them?" Lucy asked with greatest level of concern in her voice. She cared for Dianne, but Dianne didn't seem to grasp the depth of her concern.
Lucy despised the Grendel and any other pureblood fanatics. Lucy was a pure-blood and didn't see the difference in blood status, true the idea of muggles giving birth to a witch or wizard astounded Lucy to no end. She listened as Dianne explained about a "favor" gone wrong. "I'll say it went wrong. It went so badly that you collapsed bleeding in middle Diagon alley. Where were comrades when this all took place? I would think they would enjoyed watching you kill once again. Or were they and left you to die just like our kind did the night of your attack." She smirked. Dianne was almost the closet companion Lucy had in the vampire world. Lucy had saved her from the brink of death.
"Well enough about the Grendel. I came looking for you because your furry companion is missing you. Plus i had something else i wished to discuss with you tonight. But first eat this it will help regain your strength" Lucy said calmly, in a small french accent she picked up from Dianne, as she had Dianne a blood lollipop from her personal stash, but she figured beofbefore going home Dianne would find some man an bring back to Lucy's place and drain them of blood. Lucy didn't agree with her choice to do that and ever since dianne started bringing men to the castle Lucy's reputation at the ministry as kind heated caring vampire had greatly diminished. She always to the blame for Dianne's acrions when the ministry came a knocking. Lucy reached into her pocket at pulled out the old letter to addressed to Dianne. "I found this at the reading room table. What is this about? It seems to me that you kept your daughter secret from me. Knowing you i thought would have shared that and used it against me to make me feel more guilty for turning you." Lucy she with slightest questioning look.
Lucy did feel bad but she did what to be done to save Dianne. She reached back into her pocket and pulled out another blood lollipop because she hadn't eaten all day. She unwrapped the tasty morsel and stuck it in her mouth before returning back to Dianne. " Well i want know more about your daughter." Lucy said with the same curious tone that had gotten her into trouble many times in the past.

Lucy was wrong. She had given this speech to Dianne way more than ten times, and Dianne knew how it would end; a stalemate. Neither party would budge from their opinion, no matter how many angry remarks Dianne would throw at Lucy when she felt the older vampire had gone too far. Dianne pretended to mouth along to Lucy’s little lecture, the effect pulled off quite nicely she thought by the odd head bob here and there. Lucy would never be able to understand Dianne’s reasons for becoming involved with the Grendel; they were like her family now anyway, and it was too late to back out from their deal. According to Lucy, there was always some other way of dealing with a problem that didn’t have to involve violence – she was such an idealist.
"I'll say it went wrong. It went so badly that you collapsed bleeding in middle Diagon alley. Where were comrades when this all took place? I would think they would enjoyed watching you kill once again. Or were they and left you to die just like our kind did the night of your attack."
“I did not collapse” she retorted sharply, mimicking the last word in Lucy’s voice. “I would have picked myself right up again if you hadn’t decided to show up” this, she knew, was a lie. There was no way Dianne would have been able to stand up without support; though there was no way her pride was going to allow Dianne to admit this to Lucy. If she was truthful, Dianne was half-glad Lucy had shown up when she did – despite everything, at least Dianne understood that she could rely on the other woman in times of need. Dianne watched curiously as Lucy took something from her robe, her dark eyes following every movement. This curiosity soon turned into a look of utter disgust as her companion produced a blood lollipop from some private stash (she always seemed to have a small handful on her, wherever she was) and Dianne was highly tempted to turn her nose up at the gift. Despite herself, she took it roughly from Lucy before examining the sweet critically, knowing it would probably be the best source of food she would get that night. “I don’t see why you can’t just behave like any normal vampire” she muttered, though there wasn’t any malice in her words. Dianne had long ago come to accept her mentor’s strange choice in food.
Tearing off the wrapper with shaking hands (since when had she started shaking? Was she really that bad?), Dianne popped the lollipop into her mouth with a noise that may have resembled something close to a thank you toward Lucy. Dianne made a face at the taste in her mouth – it was suitable for now, but it was too sickly sweet for Dianne to see what the great appeal toward the sweet was; that was the English for you. Dianne turned toward Lucy again with a bored expression on her face as she produced something from her pocket, though this instantly turned to utter fury as Dianne recognised the object in question.
"I found this at the reading room table. What is this about? It seems to me that you kept your daughter secret from me. Knowing you i thought would have shared that and used it against me to make me feel more guilty for turning you."
What right had Lucy in going through Dianne’s letters! In an instant Dianne had snatched the letter and pushed herself as far away from the other vampire as possible, cursing herself when she realised standing was still an impossibility at this point. “Vous me dites mieux diable vous pensez que vous étiez faire, passant par mes lettres privees, vous sorcičre!” Dianne began a chain of rambling French, forgetting in her anger that Lucy would be unlikely to understand what she was saying. To hell with courtesy, that witch had been through her personal letters. Her letters. After several minutes in which Dianne continued to mutter under her breath, she finally took some slow breaths and looked at Lucy, her eyes blazing. “What exactly did you think you were doing?” she asked thrusting the letter in the air, her words hardly comprehendible and her accent more complex than ever before in her anger.

Lucy knew from past experiences to know when Dianne was lyin, and in the case of getting back up again she wouldn't have made it up for a while. At least not before someone found her and then probably proceeded to kill her because of her being a vampire. "I'm sure would have but in the meantime i would have been home with a worried Dog pacing the castle" Lucy said warmly but to imply that she didn't believe Dianne. Lucy chuckled at the comment of being a normal vampire. They had this discussion before and it all boiled down to that unlike the rest of her kind that sought out only food and the next kill, Lucy would rather get to know people and animals were out of the question because she cared to much for them. "Well if you don't want the Lollipop I know a great muggle bar not too far from here, but in your condition I would just as well rather eat it and heal then go hunting. Then again as you have stated earlier I'm not a normal vampire so I wouldn't actually hunt." Lucy said in a compassionate tone.
Lucy half expected the fit of rage from the younger vampire. What really threw Lucy off was the rambling in french that Dianne had done. Yes, it was true that maybe Lucy was in the wrong to go through Dianne's stuff. It was however her castle and she was just cleaning it. She expected Dianne's quest. "I was cleaning the castle. It wasn't like i was purposely going through your stuff. I have enough decency to give you some privacy. I haven't even read the letter all i saw the address and the words your daughter. Forgive me for being curious about the person I live with." Lucy said calmly and in a tone that showed she wasn't getting defensive.
Lucy Knew nothing of the life Dianne had left behind when she became a vampire. All Lucy knew was that Dianne was mad at Lucy for turning her. She now more Leverage to use against Lucy to get away with anything. It puzzled Lucy why Dianne wasn't using this leverage to it fullest potential. One word about her Daughter would have made Lucy shut up and leave matters alone. Then again Lucy wasn't one to pry into personal matters, which was ironic considering the fact that she had just saw a personal letter addressed to Dianne. Lucy had just basically hand delivered more ammo to Dianne. Lucy bit her lip suddenly as she realized all the grief Dianne was sure to give her. the thing that bugged Lucy the most was the fact that if the castle hadn't been so filthy she would have never ventured to clean the place and would have never found out about Dianne's daughter. This made her more upset at herself and she decided to sit there and graciously take the verbal assault from Dianne.

Dianne closed her eyes, sitting back and leaning against the wall again, only this time she was sitting opposite Lucy. It was frustrating not knowing how to handle tough situations any longer. When Dianne was an auror it had been her job to know her next move, and the move of her enemy too. She had always been one step ahead; it was why Dianne had been so good at her job, had been why she had been given her own assignment and other aurors to lead. Damn it, Dianne had been a good auror. However, all that instinct and knowledge disappeared with her confidence upon learning about her transformation; yes, she could still avoid the aurors (the enemy now, how irony hated her) and Dianne was always quick and efficient with her jobs – but the buzz had gone. That thrill you really needed in order to get the most out of a situation, when you truly felt passionate about what you were doing. That had gone now; the grendel gave Dianne a life, but a half-life. What use was that?
Better than no life at all. That was what Dianne would tell herself again and again. Only now she was left with all these emotions, all these thoughts and feelings, and Dianne didn’t understand half of them. It seemed that when she became a vampire she became an emotional wreck, most likely a nervous breakdown she had always rather bitterly thought. Crying into the arms of Lucy one minute, the next she was up, suddenly so very angry at everyone; it would often alter how she carried out a job too. One day she might be merciful, making sure that the killing was quick and painless and that the victim didn’t know what had hit them. Others…other days Dianne would become something even she didn’t recognise, sleeping with them and then dragging out their inevitable deaths for hours while they begged her to stop. It was those days Dianne would stumble back to Lucy’s home, drunk from alcohol (how she despised being such a lightweight), excitable and energetic from the amount of blood she had taken that night, and on such a high from that feeling of having power over another that it was impossible for Lucy to control her until exhaustion kicked in.
“You didn’t read it” it was a whisper, perhaps more to reassure herself than to acknowledge Lucy. A hand swept through her dark hair, pushing it out of her face; Dianne lingered her fingers on the wetness she felt there, not sure whether the blood she saw as she pulled her hand away and looked at it was hers or someone else’s. Did it really matter? Wiping the blood off on her clothes, Dianne let herself remember the actual events of that night. “This isn’t me” she muttered, pulling her good leg into her body and wrapping small arms around it. Her eyes still closed, Dianne let her mind revisit the apartment; a dark room, the drapes firmly shut, the face of a man (much too close for comfort) as Dianne put her lips against his neck – feeling his exhale of air as she took him by surprise and bit down hard.
Her eyes snapped open with a barely concealed whimper escaping her throat, her gaze sweeping to the letter on her lap toward Lucy – still there, patient as ever. Suddenly her face hardened, her expression determined and her eyes blazing. “I had to do it” she said, her voice stronger this time. “I had to” not that Lucy would ever understand – with her morals and her scruples – not everyone had the liberty of such privileges. “He was hardly worth it anyway – I don’t even know why they wanted him dealt with. He was hardly a threat. His brother-“, here Dianne broke off, gesturing toward her injuries, “he was the one they didn’t warn me about”

Lucy smiles when asked if she didn't read the letter. She had done some stupid mistakes in real life and her undead life to last her awhile. The one stupid thing Lucy would never do was to open someone else's letters. She considered it an invasion of privacy. She had more moral standing then that, Even if it made her an outcast among vampires. Lucy stuck by her morals and never faulted much. SHe turned to Dianne and sat on the pavement next to her. "My dear sweet Dianne i never read people's letter's. they are personal and precious things to people, even people like us." Lucy said with all understanding and compassion in her voice. She watched as Dianne slid the letter over to her. Lucy just gently picked it up and pocketed it.
She then handed Dianne her wand back, she then proceeded to examine the wound on Dianne's leg to see how the progress of her healing spell was doing. All Lucy could see now was a small opening like a small scratch. She smiled, it felt good to doing something for others even if the other person might not be grateful for it. She then Listened as Dianne spoke of her job for the Grendel. She wrapped her arm around Dianne and offered a shoulder to cry on. " Dianne, I know you are aware of my feelings and comments on the group. I will not lecture you, all I will say is you had a choice." She said in nonjudgmental way. It was the kind of tone most people would agree with her. She chuckled at the brother comment. "well you should plan for everything you never when unexpected things will come come up." She commented in mid-chuckle. It was true unexpected things happen.
(brain dead for the moment so this is it for Lucy's post.)

"My dear sweet Dianne i never read people's letter's. they are personal and precious things to people, even people like us."
People like us. How Dianne despised that word – us. Before it had been her against them, but now Dianne had joined the race she had for so long been determined to kill. Once upon a time Dianne would have venomously argued against the use of ‘people’ in Lucy’s sentence, but being on the receiving end of such jibes had taught Dianne a hard lesson when it came to that touchy subject. No, Dianne hadn’t asked for this life, but the truth was that she didn’t have a choice anymore. It was either suck it up and live with it, or not. No half-way point or shades of grey here; a simple choice.
So far Dianne had chosen the first idea, to give her new life a chance. It was hard actually do anything worthwhile though when you knew there was nothing to reach for – vampires were ostracised, the ‘others’ in society, and hadn’t been given all that many opportunities in life. Seeing the wand being offered, Dianne took it without a word and kept her grip on it tight, it being the only defence she had at that moment. How she hated being vulnerable, being weak. She had always been taught to be strong by her father, to have opinions despite what others might think – it was how she got the job at the Ministry at what some might have considered a young age. Her talent and determination (and, admittedly, her fathers influence) meant Dianne had the ability to go further than many women could at that time. Why was it that the idea of equality was spreading so fast around the globe, giving people freedom, yet Dianne remained very much trapped?
"well you should plan for everything you never when unexpected things will come come up."
Dianne let herself be held by Lucy, for the moment anyway. Only for a minute, she told herself, and only because she was too tired to push her away. Her head leant on Lucy’s shoulder as she considered the other vampire’s words. “Things like very large and very angry men who get a little upset by a dead brother, you mean?” if only he had never walked in. She wouldn’t be in this state, he wouldn’t be dead and everything would have gone just as she and the Grendel had planned it. “I can see how they could be a problem”
