“Pawn to E4.”
Hugo was playing Wizard Chess with himself. Admittedly, it wasn’t particularly interesting playing against yourself, as you knew what move you were going to make next, but it was better than lying on your bed, counting cracks in the ceiling. Hugo had been doing that earlier, and, after getting a different number of cracks every single time, he’d decided that there had to be something slightly more interesting than this to occupy himself with. He hated the house in the week up to the start of term; all school supplies had been bought, so there were no more trips to Diagon Alley, which was certainly the best thing about going back to school, an event which otherwise would have spelled doom and gloom. Of course, these trips meant sneaking off to Uncle George’s shop with the cousins while his mum went and bought his books and then being measured for yet another set of robes (it wasn’t the most exciting thing in the world, but as he’d been told, if he would just stop growing, then perhaps he wouldn’t constantly need new clothes) before going for something to eat with the whole family in tow. But now it was quiet, there were no cousins around to hang out with, he didn’t feel like seeking out Rose, who would probably tell him to get lost anyway, and only Merlin knew where his parents were. His mother was probably preparing her going back to school lecture on how he must remember to try his best and do all his homework on time, and that because this was his OWL year, he must remember to start revising as soon as possible. Ugh, Hugo was dreading it already. As for his father, Hugo didn’t have a clue. Maybe he should go and find him, and see if he wanted to play Chess. He’d have less of a chance of winning if he wasn’t playing himself.
He was so bored, though. Even playing Chess wasn’t particularly interesting when you didn’t have someone to talk to. When you had a family as large as Hugo’s, it was easy to feel incredibly lonely when there weren’t people surrounding you every minute of the day and night. Of course, in a week or so, he’d be back at school, sharing his room with four other people and the common room with scores, but it was so easy to get used to the fact that there’d always be someone around for you to talk to, even if it was only because you were complaining as they’d stolen your socks again. Apparently it was highly amusing if Hugo’s feet froze. Watching as the black bishop destroyed a white pawn, Hugo listened to the house. Silence. It was always too bloody silent in this house, unless someone was over to stay. Part of Hugo wanted to stand up and shout something at the top of his voice, just to make some noise and alert the rest of his family to his existence. However, he didn’t do so; it’d be too much energy to muster enough volume. He’d just lie here on his bed with his chess set in front of him and wait patiently for something interesting to happen.
What was there that could happen, though? After all, any exciting things that were going to happen to their world had happened during his parents’ time at school; the world had had its fill of powerful Dark wizards, plots to kill his Uncle Harry, people wanting to take over the school and all those other things he’d heard about all through his childhood. Nothing exciting was ever going to happen to his generation; if he was lucky, the highlight of the day would be lunchtime. Mm, food. But that seemed to Hugo to be hours away, still plenty of time to contemplate on the boredom the day. Oh, a few days into the term he’d wish for solitude, that was a dead cert, but the grass was always greener on the other side of the fence; he wanted what he couldn’t have at that moment in time, and that was some company. That wasn’t to say that his parents were neglectful. He might have felt slightly rebellious at times, but that was one thing that they certainly were not. They just had things to do as well, and having a game of chess with their youngest child was obviously not at the top of their list of priorities for the day. He wished it was, though.
