Adult Applications

Please apply for a character by creating a new thread in the Sort Hat with your character's name as the title. Do NOT add "finished" or "done" to your title when you have finished your application - there is a section for that right in the app! By adding such to your title, staff will edit your application to take it out!

The posting minimum is 10 (ten) sentences, so make sure that appearance, likes and dislikes, interests and hobbies, strengths, weaknesses, overall personality, history, and your RP sample have that many. Your must explain something unique, secrets and boggart; this should be done in at least two sentences. More is acceptable, and we in fact encourage more.

Please note.

You will be accepted with three "yays" and you will be denied with three "nays". Once accepted, your member group will change to adult and your occupation will be added underneath.

If the staff does ask you to change something in your application, we are in no way or means trying to change your character. We are asking you to look and analyze your character, to develop them deeply so that they might be able to take on a life of their own. Or, it might be that something you have in your application is against the rules, or already being used by a fair share of other players. We want you to have a unique, fun character that isn't like everyone else's.

Application Demi-Rules
This means if you go against something here, we will probably note it in your application. Try and read through them, even briefly, so you know what to expect!

• All parts of the application are mandatory and must be kept in proper format.
  
  
• If you are applying for an original character, please refer to the Available Canons and Years thread.
  
  
• Your application should be completely comprised of your own writing. This means that we don't want to see portions of your application copied from any website unless it's written by you. A quote from the books about the character is fine, but any other descriptions will be asked to be rewritten.
  
  
• No lists, please. This is a play-by-post role play and we like to have attributes not only be mentioned, but also explained. This means taking what would be in a list and telling why that is whatever it is, and how it got to that point, and answering the other who-what-when-where-why-how questions about that particular point. If your application is full of lists, we will ask you to change them. Please make everything sentences.
  
  
• Bright colors will be asked to be changed, or changed directly by a staff member. We cannot read an application that glows more than the screen does, which is why in the rules we ask that people try and leave text the normal color, so that people with bad eyes like ours can read through things. It will also help speed up the reading and processing of your application.
  
  
• Canon characters will be judged more critically than original characters as they are more sought-after than not.
  
  
• We want canon's canon. The process here is to make sure we know that you have a grasp of the character you are applying for. We already know about the character, or maybe we don't. It's your job to get inside their heads.
  
  
• If you would like to apply for a professor, please be sure to read through the Duties of Professors.
  
  
• Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! (This is an actual rule.) The beauty of the character will be determined by other members. This is not a request, it is a rule - we do not need opinions on the beauty or perfection of your character and we will ask you to change it.
  
  
• Fluffy eats Mary Sues and we feed him regularly. Please remember this and leave the perfection and mutli-tasking masterful fourth year on the third floor. If you don't know who she is, please refer to our Mary Sue Guidelines

Remember, the staff is eager to help you if you are stuck in any area, so do not feel afraid to ask. The members are there for your help too, so if a staff member is not on, feel free to ask anyone for help.

Parts of the application explained.

PREVIOUS ROLES: This is just to gauge how many characters you have or have had, and also to see how much experience you have.

EMPLOYMENT: This will be determined by a resume, unless you have a canon job.

YEAR/AGE: This is suggested. We might decide to place you somewhere else based upon your abilities. Note, this role play is set in the year 1998, so if your character was born in the 90's, they'd be infants.

APPEARANCE: Simply putting a picture will not do. Describe how the character looks. Remember, we don't like to hear how beautiful or perfect your character is; just a description will do.

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES: Please remember that this section must meet the posting minimum, and that lists are discouraged in your final product. Explain why a strength or a weakness is what it is, and how that affects your character. Also remember that skill level in any number of things should be realistically based on age and level in school or outside of school. A first year, for example, would not be able to produce a Patronus charm.

INTERESTS AND HOBBIES: This can be anything that interests your character, and should meet the ten-sentence minimum. Be sure to include why and how whatever it is is an interest or hobby, as it will not only help explain it to everyone else, but will help meet that minimum.

SECRETS: What deep, dark secrets does your character carry that no one else knows about? Have they killed anyone and don't want anyone to know? Are they really a half-blood? What are the dark secrets you don't want anyone but your character to know about? This will help you dig into the character and also will give other people insight, though it won't affect interaction.

BOGGART: This should be what scares them, their darkest fears come to life.

PATRONUS: This is just one word - it's the creature that appears when they produce a Patronus charm.

PERSONALITY: Must be filled out fully. Everyone has at least one thing to hide. How do they react in situations, how do they treat others? How do they feel?

HISTORY: There are four parts to a history that all applications should include; the childhood, their relationships with their family, their early time at Hogwarts, and their current time at Hogwarts. Think about your character's past, their home life, childhood, experiences. What aspects of their lives provoked them to become who they are today? What are their interests and how does that tie into their past?

SOMETHING UNIQUE: Does not necessarily mean you are invited to be an Animagus or something. This is simply there to point out something about your character that's different from the rest.

ROLE-PLAY: If your example is strong you are more likely to get the part you are asking for. If it's weak, we'll probably accept you but place you where you are likely to encounter people of the same posting ability. Role-plays must be in the character you are applying for, and can either be from another site or freshly written.
